English Premier League – Chelsea vs Arsenal

The biggest game of the weekend takes place on Sunday lunchtime as last season’s Premier League Champions, Chelsea, host Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. Both sides will be desperate to pick up a victory in this game, but Arsenal know that if they lose here they could well find themselves seven points off the top of the league after just five games. Arsene Wenger has a shocking record in big games, especially away from home, where he has won just two of the last 21 away games against top six sides, conceding 52 goals in the process.

Chelsea come into this game full of confidence following four successive wins in all competitions and on Tuesday night they destroyed Qarabag 6-0 in their first Champions League group match. Antonio Conte’s side have overcome that shock opening day defeat to Burnley and they do look like a side who will challenge again this season. In Alvaro Morata they look to have found a perfect replacement for Diego Costa and the Spanish striker has already found the net four times this season.

It has been a difficult season for Arsenal so far and the pressure is right back on Arsene Wenger after signing a new contract this summer. Defeats to Stoke City and Liverpool in the Premier League have left Arsenal well off the pace already and they had to come from behind to beat FC Koln on Thursday night in the Europa League in a match that was marred by crowd trouble outside the ground. Wenger has no fresh injuries heading into the game and Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin remain on the long term injury list. Jack Wilshere made his return to the squad on Thursday night and the former England midfielder will be hoping to feature again on Sunday.

Talking Points

  1. Chelsea have scored at least one goal in each of their last 10 games.
  2. Arsenal will be desperate to end a run of 2 wins from 21 games away at the Top 6 sides.
  3. In the last 5 games between these two sides there have been 5 matches with over 2.5 goals.

Arsenal have been shocking in big games in the last few years, even more so away from home and I can’t see anything other than a comfortable victory for Chelsea in this one. Chelsea look like a solid team with Alvaro Morata dovetailing perfectly with Eden Hazard and Willian in attack and I think they will have too much for a creaky looking Arsenal backline. Arsenal’s main hope will be that Alexis Sanchez can inspire something from the team, but the Chilean has looked a shadow of the player from the last two seasons following the failure of his transfer to Manchester City on deadline day.

Betting Tips (Ladbrokes)

Chelsea start this game as 4/5 favourites, whilst an away win for Arsenal is available at 18/5 and the draw is 3/1. I think the 11/5 available on Chelsea to win and BTTS looks like a great bet to me as there have been lots of goals in the last five fixtures between these two sides. In terms of goal scorers, Alvaro Morata is 7/2 to open the scoring and 4/1 to score two or more; I think either of those could definitely be solid bets in a game that I expect Chelsea to dominate. Chelsea and BTTS (YES) – 11/5 (Ladbrokes – find here a Ladbrokes review) (Odds from www.online-betting.org)
